Using the Platform
The Alliance4XR Platform is a web-based learning and collaboration environment developed within the Alliance4XR Erasmus+ project to support the adoption of eXtended Reality (XR) in Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training. It provides educators, trainers, students and project partners with access to educational resources, immersive learning experiences and tools for creating and sharing XR-based learning content.
The platform has been designed to help bridge the gap between education and industry by making XR technologies more accessible and practical for engineering-related education.
Searchable articles and answers to common platform questions.

Watch, learn and share. Subscribe to the Alliance4XR YouTube channel to stay up to date.
Training
Resources for educators and trainers using XR in the classroom.
A practical guide for educators using extended reality (XR). It supports the planning, delivery, assessment and evaluation of inclusive, ethical and purposeful XR-enhanced learning.
Practical guidance for getting started and working day to day on the platform.
Articles and answers, kept up to date by the team.
Key XR and platform terms explained in plain language.
Use cases
Real examples, 3D assets, 360° photography and courses built with partner universities and industry.
Renewable energy, LOTO health & safety procedures, wind turbine maintenance.
BIM workflows, beams and structural assemblies explored in immersive 3D.
Onboard procedures and equipment training in a safe virtual environment.
Identification of advanced structures and other classroom-ready cases.
Support
Yes. Alliance4XR is free for educational use. Teachers and tutors can create courses, build 3D content and run live sessions at no cost. You only need an account with a valid email address. The platform is part of an Erasmus+ project co-funded by the European Union. Commercial use is not allowed (see the Terms & Conditions).
Yes. Students do not need an account. They can join using a code provided by their teacher. For live sessions, students enter the 5-digit session PIN and then their name. For Collections, they enter the 5-digit collection PIN to open the shared 3D creations. Accounts are required for teachers, who create and share the content.
You can upload content to your Library. Supported content includes documents (PDF, Word, PowerPoint and Excel; up to 50 MB and 100 pages), images, video, audio and 360° panoramas (up to 100 MB). You can also upload 3D models in GLB, glTF, OBJ with its MTL file, STL, IFC and Gaussian splat formats (up to 100 MB). The Create Wizard guides you through uploading 3D objects, panoramas and 360° videos. You can then arrange your content into 3D scenes in the Creation Center, group creations into Collections and add them to course lessons. Public creations made by other teachers can also be copied and adapted. To add material to the public Learning Resources library, contact the Alliance4XR team through Support.
You need a computer, tablet or phone with an up-to-date web browser such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, and an internet connection. There is nothing to install. The browser must support 3D graphics through WebGL, which is available on current browsers and devices. For immersive VR or AR, you need a device whose browser supports WebXR. During live sessions, teachers can also use a microphone, camera and screen sharing, while students participate through the chat.
Alliance4XR runs directly in the browser using the WebXR standard, so no app is required. VR is supported on headsets whose browsers support WebXR. The platform has been tested mostly on Meta Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest 3S using the Meta Quest Browser. AR is supported on Android phones and tablets with Chrome and ARCore, as well as passthrough headsets such as Quest 3. iPhone and iPad devices can display 3D scenes in the browser, but do not support AR or VR because Safari does not support WebXR.
Students can only enter a live session using its PIN and while the session is open. Teachers can decide what students see by sharing files and 3D creations when needed and stopping sharing at any time. Students can also be removed from a session. Collections can be accessed by anyone who has the collection PIN, and teachers can delete a Collection to stop access. Uploaded files and creations are private unless they are shared. After a lesson, teachers can export the participant list, including the times students joined and left.
You can share a PIN or a link with your students. In a live session, click the PIN to copy a join link and send it to students. The link takes them directly into the session, where they enter their name. Students can also open the Alliance4XR home page, select "Join Live Session" and enter the 5-digit session PIN. For a Collection, share its 5-digit PIN and ask students to choose "Open Collection" on the home page. Session PINs can be found in the lesson and on your Dashboard.
Yes. Your content is private by default. Uploaded files are never public and students only see them when you share them during a session. Your creations and 3D objects remain private until you choose "Make Public". Publishing requires approval by the Alliance4XR team. Once public, other teachers can view and copy them from the Public Library. You can request to make a published creation private again, although copies already made by other teachers are not removed. Courses are not shared with other teachers. Anyone with a Collection's PIN can view it, so collection PINs should only be shared with your students.
The Alliance4XR platform itself requires an internet connection because content, 3D scenes and live sessions are loaded online. However, you can export a scene from the Creation Center using "Export as Standalone". This produces a ZIP file that can run from a web server, including one on your own network, without an Alliance4XR account. The exported scene still requires an internet connection to load its 3D engine when it opens.
Yes. Students can open a session or Collection directly in their device's browser. When the browser supports WebXR, an "Immersive XR" button appears once the scene has loaded. The platform uses AR where the device supports it, such as on passthrough headsets or compatible Android phones, and VR otherwise. This is available in sessions, Collections and previews.
Any head-mounted device whose browser supports WebXR can use the platform. Examples include Meta Quest, Pico and HTC Vive headsets. Alliance4XR has been tested mostly on Meta Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest 3S using the Meta Quest Browser. Passthrough headsets such as Quest 3 can also be used for AR experiences.
No, by design. The teacher runs the live session from a computer because the teacher tools, including content sharing, the Watch view for seeing where students are looking and participant management, are available on the desktop. Students can enter immersive XR from their own devices. To experience your own creations in XR, open them on your headset through a Collection or through Preview while signed in to your account.
